Can I read the building codes for free?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

Yes, in most cases you can read the model I-Codes free in a view-only format. The International Code Council offers public online access to its codes, though the free version limits viewing to one section at a time and has reduced search and print features compared with paid subscriptions. Your local government may also post its adopted code amendments on its own website. Keep in mind that the model code is only a starting point: what counts is the edition your city or county actually adopted, plus any local changes. Ask the building department which edition and amendments are in force.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
