Will my home be set with a crane or slid off the truck?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

It depends on the site, the foundation and the hauler's equipment. FEMA's manufactured home guide notes that a crane or roller system is typically needed to place a home onto a permanent perimeter foundation. A tilt-bed or roll-off delivery slides the home off the back of the truck, so it needs a level, firm landing area and room behind the truck. A crane needs a firm, level spot for the crane itself, clear overhead space free of power lines and branches, and reach to the pad, which adds cost. Ask the delivery company which method it uses and what clearances and ground conditions it requires before you finish site work.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
