What does a well pressure tank do?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

A pressure tank stores water under pressure so the well pump does not have to start every time you open a tap. Compressed air inside the tank pushes water out to the house; as you use water, pressure falls until the pressure switch turns the pump on, and the pump refills the tank until it reaches the shut-off setting. The Water Systems Council says common pump start settings are 30, 40 or 50 psi and common stop settings are 50, 60 or 70 psi. If the pump turns on and off rapidly, pressure is weak, or flow is uneven, the tank, switch or pump may need service by a licensed well or pump installer.
