How long does it take for a new flood insurance policy to start?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

A new NFIP flood policy generally takes effect 30 days after purchase. FloodSmart lists exceptions. There is no wait when the policy is bought in connection with making, increasing, extending, or renewing a loan, or when coverage is changed at renewal. There is a 1-day wait for property newly mapped into a high-risk zone, if bought within 12 months of the map change. There is also a 1-day wait for certain flooding after a wildfire, within 60 days of containment. Because of the waiting period, it helps to arrange flood coverage before closing, or well before storm season, rather than when a storm is forecast.
