Will adding a home to my land raise my property taxes in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Generally yes, because Texas taxes property at its market value, and a home or other improvement on the land usually adds value. Texas has no state property tax. Local appraisal districts value property each year as of January 1, and school districts, counties, cities, and special districts each set their own tax rates. The Comptroller says homeowners are typically notified of a value increase by April 1. Owners who disagree can protest to the appraisal review board. Bills are generally due by January 31, and penalties and interest begin February 1. A manufactured home kept as personal property may be listed on the tax roll as a separate account from the land. Contact your county appraisal district for how your structure will be listed.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
