Is there a minimum distance from the home to a septic system?
TexasReviewed October 2026
Yes. Under the Texas OSSF rules (30 TAC Chapter 285, Table X), a septic tank and a standard soil absorption drainfield must each be at least 5 feet from foundations, buildings and other structures. The same 5-foot figure applies to the sewer pipe between the house and the tank. This is a state minimum: your local permitting authority can adopt stricter distances, and other states set their own numbers, often larger. For example, Virginia Cooperative Extension cites 10 feet from foundations under Virginia rules. Some states also require a reserved backup drainfield area, so work out the system layout during the site evaluation, before the home is placed.
Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
