How far does a septic system need to be from a pond, creek or lake?

TexasReviewed October 2026

In Texas, a septic tank must be at least 50 feet from streams, ponds, lakes, rivers and creeks, and a standard soil absorption drainfield must be at least 75 feet away. Texas A&M AgriLife notes the drainfield distance can be reduced to 50 feet when an advanced (secondary treatment) system is used, and the rule table also lists 50 feet for surface spray areas. Drip lines can range from 25 to 75 feet depending on site conditions. Properties on the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone have extra rules. Because water features also affect floodplain limits, which the site evaluator must check, map any pond or creek before choosing where the home goes.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
