How often should a septic tank be pumped and inspected?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

EPA recommends having a typical household septic system inspected by a professional at least every three years and pumped every three to five years; systems with mechanical parts, such as aerobic units, generally need yearly inspection. TCEQ also recommends pumping conventional tanks every three to five years. The right interval depends on tank size, household size and water use; Texas A&M AgriLife estimates a 1,000-gallon tank serving four people needs pumping about every 2.6 years. To protect the system, use water efficiently and never flush wipes, grease, medicines or chemicals.
