How do I protect my pipes from freezing in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Prepare before cold weather arrives. Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves or heat tape, especially in crawl spaces, attics, exterior walls and well houses, and seal drafts near pipes. Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets. During a freeze, let cold water drip from faucets on exposed lines and open sink cabinet doors so warm air reaches pipes. Texas A&M AgriLife notes pipes can freeze and burst at about 20 degrees F or below. Know where your main shutoff is. If pipes freeze, use a hair dryer, heating pad or space heater, never an open flame, and call a licensed plumber if you cannot find the frozen section.
