How should I protect plumbing if the home will be empty during a freeze?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

Turn the water off and keep some heat on. Austin Water advises people leaving during freezing weather to shut off the water at the meter and keep the thermostat at 65 degrees F or higher, while the American Red Cross says to leave it at no lower than 55 degrees F when away. Draining outdoor lines and hoses beforehand reduces risk. On a well, the Water Systems Council says to protect the pump and pressure tank in an insulated enclosure, insulate the small fitting between the pressure switch and tank, and wrap an exposed wellhead. Have someone check the home after a hard freeze for leaks.
