Are there down payment assistance programs for homebuyers in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Yes, state and local governments offer down payment help, and HUD points buyers to its state pages and to HUD-approved housing counselors to find programs. In Texas, TDHCA runs My First Texas Home for first-time buyers, which also covers veterans and buyers in certain targeted areas. It also runs My Choice Texas Home, which has no first-time buyer requirement. Both pair down payment assistance with 30-year mortgages through participating lenders and require an approved homebuyer education course. TDHCA also offers a Mortgage Credit Certificate that can reduce federal income tax for qualifying buyers. Income limits, assistance amounts, and eligible property types vary by program, so confirm with TDHCA or a participating lender whether your home type qualifies.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
