How much does a septic system cost?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

Costs vary widely with soil, system type and location, and official sources give only rough figures. EPA's SepticSmart homeowner guide (2015) cites about $250 to $300 for routine pumping every few years and $3,000 to $7,000 to replace a failed system; prices today may be higher. Permit fees are set locally: the Angelina & Neches River Authority lists $485 for a single-family residential permit (2025), while Tarrant County lists a $260 application fee. Aerobic systems add maintenance contract and electricity costs. EPA notes help may be available through USDA rural home repair loans and grants. Get written quotes from licensed local installers.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
