What are the signs of a failing septic system?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

EPA lists several warning signs: wastewater backing up into household drains; bright green, spongy grass over the drainfield even in dry weather; pooling water or muddy soil around the tank or drainfield; and strong sewage odors near the tank or field. A failing system can contaminate wells and nearby water with bacteria and nitrates, so EPA suggests asking your local health department about testing your well water. In Texas, repairs generally require a permit, though certain small emergency repairs, such as replacing tank lids or risers, can be done first and reported in writing within 72 hours.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
