Who can install a septic system in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

In Texas, septic systems must be installed by a TCEQ-licensed installer. An Installer I may install standard systems such as septic tanks with absorptive drainfields, leaching chambers and gravel-less pipe; an Installer II may install all types, including aerobic and other advanced systems. Apprentices work only under a licensed installer's direct supervision. A homeowner may install their own system if they solely own the property, it serves their own single-family home, the property will not be developed for sale or lease, and all permit rules are met; anyone else who helps must be licensed, except electricians and tank delivery workers. TCEQ offers an online license search.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
