Are septic setback distances the same in every state?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

No. In the United States, septic systems are regulated by states, tribes and local governments, not by the federal government, so setback distances vary by location. For example, NC State Extension advises keeping your well and neighbors' wells 100 feet or more from the septic system, while Virginia Cooperative Extension cites 10 feet from foundations and 50 feet from wells under Virginia rules. Texas uses its own Table X (for example, 100 feet from a private well to a standard drainfield). EPA advises contacting your local permitting authority, usually a health or environmental department, to get the exact setback and placement rules that apply to your lot.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
