Can I do my own electrical work on my home in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Under state law, possibly. TDLR's exemption list says a person doing electrical work on a home they own and live in does not need a state electrician license. That exemption does not override local rules: cities and regions can be stricter under the licensing act, so a city may still require permits, inspections, or a licensed electrician. Doing your own work also does not remove the need to meet the electrical code. Check with your city or county building office before you start any wiring.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
