How do I get electric service to a new home site?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Start by calling the utility or electric co-op that serves your land, because the steps are set by that provider. Texas co-ops typically ask for a 911 address, a membership application with ID, and an on-site meeting with a staking or field engineer who designs the line route. You then sign an easement, pay any construction charge up front, and have your electrician install the meter base and wiring on your side. After your wiring is inspected, the utility sets the meter and energizes it. In areas open to retail competition, such as Oncor's territory, the builder gets a premise (ESI ID) number from the wires company, and a retail electric provider places the meter order. Timelines depend on weather and workload, so apply early.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
