Do I have to provide the meter pole, meter base, and wiring myself?

TexasReviewed October 2026

In most cases, yes. Texas co-ops commonly state that the member supplies and installs the meter base and all wiring on the customer side, while the co-op builds the line only to the point of delivery. Tri-County Electric Cooperative, for example, asks members to install the temporary pole, meter base, and breaker box to its specifications, and Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative requires a disconnect switch below the meter. The utility usually provides and owns the meter itself. Because specifications differ (height, pole type, overhead versus underground), get the provider's written requirements before your electrician buys parts.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
