Does my wiring need an inspection before the utility turns on power?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Generally yes. In Oncor's service area, city inspection must clear before the meter is set, and orders are held up to 20 work days waiting for it. Rural co-ops often send their own field technician to check the service entrance before activation, as Lyntegar Electric Cooperative describes. Texas law makes local authorities (cities, some counties, and regions) responsible for permits and inspections; the state licensing agency, TDLR, does not inspect individual jobs. Where no local permit exists, the work still must meet the state-adopted electrical code. Ask both the utility and your local building office what release they need before scheduling the meter.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
