Which edition of the electrical code applies in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

Texas adopts the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) statewide as the minimum standard. TDLR made the 2023 NEC effective September 1, 2023, and the City of Houston reports that the state adopted the 2026 NEC effective September 1, 2026. Cities may adopt local amendments, so rules inside city limits can differ. TDLR's compliance guide says that where a permit is pulled, the code in effect when the permit was issued generally applies; where no permit is required, it is the code in effect when installation begins. Ask your local building office which edition and amendments it enforces.

Check your local rule. This varies by state, county or city. Your permitting office has the final word; the official lookup pages below show you who that is.
