Is off-grid solar a realistic option for a small home on rural land?

NationwideReviewed October 2026

It can be, especially where the grid is far away. The U.S. Department of Energy says stand-alone systems are often cost-effective in remote areas, since extending lines can cost $15,000 to $50,000 per mile. An off-grid system needs more than panels: batteries, a charge controller, an inverter, safety disconnects, and metering. DOE notes that reliable systems often combine techniques, such as a hybrid with a generator plus cutting overall electricity use. DOE also cautions that solar panels alone don't make a home resilient without storage and a suitable inverter. Size the system with an installer using your real loads, including heating and cooling.
