Who is allowed to do electrical work on a home in Texas?

TexasReviewed October 2026

A state-licensed electrician working through a licensed electrical contractor, unless an exemption applies. TDLR says anyone who performs non-exempt electrical work in Texas must be licensed, and the rule applies statewide, including unincorporated rural areas. A city-issued license is good only inside that city. For homes, a Residential Wireman license covers installations in single-family and multifamily dwellings up to four stories, while journeyman and master electricians hold broader licenses. Contractors need a master electrician of record. You can check any license on TDLR's online license search or by calling 800-803-9202.
